I'm not sure if that's supposed to be a compliment or not. But I'm 38, if we're keeping score. So I guess it's a compliment.

[He's vaguely amused enough by her reaction that he almost forgets what they were initially talking about. Booker keeps walking, letting her pride heal a little for a moment or two before he says anything else.]

So why did those crows need your hair? You said it was payment?
recluserose: (How I wish you could see the potential)

[personal profile] recluserose 2016-09-18 02:03 am (UTC)(link)
[She gets too caught up in these kinds of things and it makes her curse herself for not being more of an adult. Ah, well what can you do. She replies promptly enough.]

I mentioned that they're my eyes for the parts of town I'm not usually in or when I need to gather information about anything out of the ordinary that's cropped up.

[A shrug.]

I'm like an unofficial overseer in a sense. I like where I live. I prefer that nothing bad happens to the people I live alongside with.

And they use my hair for their nests. One, a witch's hair is imbued with years of magic that has a variety of uses including protection.

Two, they like shiny things.
invigor: (➤sometimes i feel i've got to)

[personal profile] invigor 2016-09-18 02:08 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, they do. [He knows that much about crows, at least, given his... associations with them in the past. He decides to leave that part out for now, however.]

Do "bad things" ever happen in this town? [You wouldn't be able to tell from looking at it, Booker thinks.]
recluserose: (15)

[personal profile] recluserose 2016-09-18 02:10 am (UTC)(link)
Every once and a while.

But I don't let it get too out of hand though.
invigor: (➤all my brothers sisters crying)

[personal profile] invigor 2016-09-18 02:13 am (UTC)(link)
But how do you handle it if it does? Your... magic, I mean. How's it work?
recluserose: (17)

[personal profile] recluserose 2016-09-18 02:16 am (UTC)(link)
A clear mind, a clear vision, and a lot of power.

[They get to the door of her house and the atmosphere around it seems welcoming, as if greeting its owner once again.]

You know, if you had entered my house from the front by forcing it, you would have had a nasty surprise.
invigor: (➤the walls come tumbling down)

[personal profile] invigor 2016-09-18 02:23 am (UTC)(link)
[Good to... know? He's about to remark that still doesn't tell him a lot, but her comment prompts him to focus on that instead. It might give him a clearer picture of what she can do, anyway.]

How nasty are we talking?

[He's seen too many of those, lately.]
recluserose: (04)

[personal profile] recluserose 2016-09-18 02:29 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, you'd get pushed back multiple times by an invisible force. You mistreat a door, it'll reject you. That's just how I decided it would be designed though.

[She unlocks the door and one of the wind chimes, one made of emerald green glass stones jingles a greeting. A second one, a more obscure chime with black tubes tingles curiously at Booker.]
invigor: (➤holding hands while)

[personal profile] invigor 2016-09-18 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
Sounds fair enough. Though not much your door can do when someone lands face-down in your living room, I reckon.

[When he enters this time, he takes note of the jingling wind chimes. They seem to have personalities all their own. He raises a brow.]
recluserose: (09)

[personal profile] recluserose 2016-09-18 02:43 am (UTC)(link)
[And she points at the wind chimes.]

I do collect these like a normal collector. But I put my magic into them. They basically tell me who's in my house at any given time.

It's usually just me. Usually.
invigor: (➤tried to hold up and be brave)

[personal profile] invigor 2016-09-18 03:38 am (UTC)(link)
They tell you anything about the person, or just that there's someone else around?
recluserose: (It's a little bit funny)

[personal profile] recluserose 2016-09-18 03:54 am (UTC)(link)
If someone visits me often enough, I'll personalize a chime for them so I know they're coming right when they're at my doorstep. Like... That one.

[Points to a rather unusual wind chime.]

That's from a friend. He got it on one of his travels and gave it to me so now it tells me when he's visiting. If it's someone I don't know, the black wind chimes will sing.
invigor: (➤lord i hate to see her go)

[personal profile] invigor 2016-09-18 05:11 am (UTC)(link)
[Huh. A fish. Cute.]

Black windchimes... Like that one?

[He thumbs at the one that had jingled just a second ago, with the black rods.]
recluserose: (Step one shut up and listen)

[personal profile] recluserose 2016-09-18 05:17 am (UTC)(link)
Mm hm.

[She closes the door behind them and exhales softly.]

A lot to take in on day one isn't it?
invigor: (➤say that you'll never never)

[personal profile] invigor 2016-09-18 05:44 am (UTC)(link)
[Booker reaches up to lightly touch at one of the chimes with his finger, an idle sort of motion. He lets his hand drop back to his side as Amelia shuts the door behind them.]

Seems to be an ongoing trend lately.

[he sighs as well, but his is heavy.]

So now what?
recluserose: (25)

[personal profile] recluserose 2016-09-18 05:47 am (UTC)(link)
I could... Show you some magic? If you're still iffy on that point, I mean.
invigor: (➤when i saw that hearse come rolling)

[personal profile] invigor 2016-09-18 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I'd call myself "iffy". Just... magic isn't something that exists where I come from. [He thinks. Honestly, he can't be 100 percent sure of anything these days.] If you feel like indulging me, I wouldn't mind seeing what it's all about.

What do I do? Just stand and watch?
recluserose: (05)

[personal profile] recluserose 2016-09-18 06:00 am (UTC)(link)
Um...

[She snaps her finger signaling an idea and goes to pull over one of her wooden kitchen chairs.]

Give me a flower, any flower.

[She seems kind of excited as if it's been a while since she's shown anyone her magic.]
invigor: (➤by and by lord by and by)

[personal profile] invigor 2016-09-18 06:09 am (UTC)(link)
[A flower? Okay, he can do that. In the meantime, Booker decides to take a seat, if this is going to be a demonstration. Might as well.]

Okay... How about... [He says the first thing that comes to mind.] A sunflower?

[Sunflowers. Not a too bad. Amelia takes a deep breath and closes her eyes for just a second, Envisioning the vivid yellow blooms with dark fuzzy centers, always facing the sun, rays of sunshine that grow from the earth...

A green glow emits from her palms that run over the surface of the chair and from the seat, tall green stalk burst through the wooden exterior and yellow buds open up into what are unmistakably sunflowers.

A something out of nothing.
]
invigor: (➤i toss and turn)

[personal profile] invigor 2016-09-18 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
[At first, Booker doesn't know what to expect. When she closes her eyes, he's not even sure where to look -- was there something supposed to be in the chair, after all?

But when the green glow emerges from her palms and begins to blanket over the chair, Booker doesn't know what to think. Some quiet part of him says that it reminds him of Possession, that same green, gentle touch that could turn a man's mind to malleable mush. Yet there was something different about what he was seeing, something he couldn't quite put his finger on. A strange sort of wonder, mixed with the instinctual uncertainty of the unknown.

So this must be magic then.

When the sunflowers appear, rising up from the wooden chair, he can't help but say a bit breathlessly:]
I don't believe it.

[And then louder, directly at Amelia this time, making a clumsy motion at the flower-chair in question.] You... you just did that? [It was unlike anything he's seen; well, barring the tears that Elizabeth could manage, but even that wasn't making something out of nothing.]
