[ That's a sticky subject, and he scratches his jaw, frowning for a fraction of a second. ]

Can't say that I remember much. Could be that my last stint out of the Throne of Heroes conveniently didn't make it back.

[ It's the only explanation he has, really. ]

[She nods. She knows a bit more than Lien at least.]

Normally, you're summoned through a carefully prepared ritual, using a catalyst. And without a Master, Servants don't last long in the material world. That's the basic gist of it.

Mm. But when it comes to memories, it doesn't necessarily mean you'd remember whether you've participated in a previous War or not does it?

No, I usually would. What happens is that our core stays at the Throne and copies of our consciousness are summoned into this world as projections. Once our job is done, or our consciousness here fades, the projection makes its way back to the original.

[ He draws a big circle in the ground, and then a few smaller ones, as if to illustrate what he's saying. ]

So. Either my last projection didn't make it back, or it got stuck in limbo and was brought here before it could say hello to the original, or some other option, I have no damn idea.

[emotive]

[Well, that's disturbing.]

The fact that you can't remember the last time you were summoned is worrying. There was a War in Fuyuki ten years ago for sure, but... It's like we're dealing with gaps we can't grasp.

[lansaigh]

[ maybe it's a blessing that cu never got to see that church, tbh... ]

Well, there's no use in wondering why I'm alive, is there? I'm thinking of it as a kind of...

If you feel that way, then it's better than being upset.

[For Ai, the fact that there are so many gaps is disturbing; after all she has and still is dealing with the huge gap in her memories. She'd prefer a few more absolutes in their case.]

[ A good long look at his companion, and he sighs. ]

Take it easy, little lady. A fortress is supposed to sit and stay; what good is it if it keeps crumbling under bad weather?

This situation is irregular. If you keep looking for things that make sense, you're gonna be running out of things to focus on real soon.

[SO WHAT HE'S SAYING IS SHE'S OVER THINKING IT and yeah she is. The pat on the back came out of nowhere for her, but it kind of snaps her back to what they should be focusing on.]

The Servant that nearly got Lien should still be around. I don't think I damaged him with my Eyes, or if I did, he's biding his time.

[ Hefting Gae Bolg on his shoulder, he pauses. ]

Seems like our partners are getting close, anyway.

[emotive]

It's nice to know that your priorities aren't that different from Lien's...

Did you want me to be alert and on-guard and ready to kill at a moment's notice?

[YOU SEE THIS FACE LANCER, THIS IS A FACE OF A GIRL WHO IS TRYING TO DEAL]

[ A laugh, seemingly unfazed by her glaring... another scratch left on another building, and Cu turns the nearest block corner towards a bigger intersection. ]

[emotive]

[She lets out a huge sigh. It seems she feels like she's having a hard time.]

You and Lien seem really suited for each other as a Master and Servant pair... Does it sound like I'm fretting too much?

[lansaigh]

A little, yeah. I'm more concerned with "what should I do now", not "why is this happening".

[ It's a difference in values, and he makes his statement in a tone that suggests that he's being value-neutral about the whole thing. A pause at the intersection, and he turns right into a part of Shinto that's less open. ]

[emotive]

I want to know why so I know what to do later. But it doesn't always help...

I'm not gonna tell you what to do, little lady. If worrying helps, then worry— but in the end, what'll work out will work out, and what won't, won't.

[emotive]

[She sounds somewhat encouraged.]

You know, at first I was admittedly doubtful, but you're rather dependable aren't you?

[ That compliment comes out of left field for him, since he'd been under the impression that he'd frustrate Ai easily. Red eyes widen and then narrow somewhat, somewhere between a wrinkle of a smile and an exasperated half-glare. ]

[GUH!!! That caught her off guard because she still does have that book although her real purpose was to learn more about her own Servant and and and...]

[Wait, what is she worried about, this is what Lien meant when she over thinks. Besides, she can own up to a question like this. So she nods, very earnestly and sincerely.]

[ He's getting this a lot, recently... minus from Lien, he doubts that she knows who he actually is. That's all well and fine, though.

You did a lot of amazing things even if some of them were questionable. But it's like what you said isn't it? There's the "now" to focus on.

And right now, there's you and your Master.

[lansaigh]

Ah, she's on her way. A couple blocks down.

[ He points directly in front of himself, down a street that turns sharply to the left after a row of houses. ]

If we wait here, she'll probably come from around that corner.
