I hear many do.
[ this insubordination... kayneth would have his head. ]

I-It was the first thing I could think of! S-Somehow nothing else came to mind and-... Geez, what was I thinking?!
no subject
I apologize. I meant only to say that it's a charming wish.
[ not helping ]
no subject
It's okay. Kind of overreacted there. My sister would tell me that I was overdoing it.
no subject
You have a sister? I wasn't aware. You don't live with her, I take it?
no subject
If I'm being honest though, she prefers to be solitary. [She has a very sheepish and regretful smile.]
We're twins you see. But we don't really share a strong bond as some people would expect.
no subject
[ Perhaps he shouldn't have asked... he knows family can sometimes be a difficult topic. ]
If you ever feel inclined to visit her, I'll respect your space.

[Trying to avoid Lien? Maybe...]

[ And Diarmuid pauses, stopping for a moment to poise Gáe Dearg by his side. ]
...Master. I sense something foreign— please, stay alert.

These fucking shadow monsters again. ]
—I ask you to stand back. This will only take a moment.

[Thao thinks about how she could set up a Bounded Field, so she wouldn't have to get in his way. Instead, after taking another few steps out of his way, she turns around so they won't be attacked from behind.]
no subject
Master. My only request is for you to watch your Servant at work.
[ And with that, he kicks off, gracefully cutting through the first shadow with his first strike, pivoting and slicing through two more with his second. If ever the word "effortless" could be used to describe anything, it'd be this. ]

There's a memory. Sensei was giving her physical training, no magic, and no Eyes involved. It was the most basic of self defense techniques and yet she kept falling over, getting struck, messing up. As hard as she tried, some tears fell and she cried, asking why, why was this necessary? Sensei was strict that day, but he comforted her.
"The world of magic is brutal. You of all people should know that. You need to learn this so the chances of danger ensnaring you won't happen again."
Ai Thao sniffled, hugging her knees. None of this was good. How could such a thing that hurt her or others be a good thing? Sensei smiled.
"It's an art you know! You think battle can't be beautiful? And that's the great thing about life. People have the power to turn the most ugly things into something that can make your heart stop and your eyes widen at its beauty."
"You'll understand someday."
▼
She totally gets it now.
This wasn't a cruel sight she was seeing. Diarmuid took something that was all too often if not all the time an ugly art and had made it his own. She thinks there's no one else in the world who wield the spears and move in the same way he did. So she watches, entranced, not because of any enchantment, but for just this one singular moment that engraves itself into her mind.]

He's reminded, vaguely, of dark nights spent running with Grainne at his side— quiet, faceless assassins that he felled without blinking, all for the love of a single woman.
The memory is a dull ache, but he knows that he would have protected her from anything, either way; a fearless princess that chose him over everything else.
When he turns around and points his spear-end on the ground, Diarmuid's expression is a mixture of calm and melancholy; there's no honor in killing creatures with no living will. ]
There doesn't seem to be anything else standing in our way. Please, be at ease.

[Ai Thao realizes she was still staring awestruck and she looks down at the ground for a few seconds, afraid he would assume she let her guard down and was getting enchanted again. Looking up with a determined look on her face, she makes her way to his side.]
I'll be more alert this time! If we follow the path where they came from I'll be able to sense the nearby leyline.
[She strangely seems re-energized all of a sudden!]
no subject
[ Which is something he can sense. A little tilt of the head indicates that he sees how much she's trying not to look at him, but he says nothing about it when her gaze moves up again, steady and strong. It's a comfort, that she tries, but he quells that thought as something imprudent.
He turns on his heels towards the direction of the whispers, and starts moving again. ]
Do you often take it upon yourself to investigate such things, Master?
no subject
[She starts walking towards the direction of the docks, wordlessly. Thao looks up at him when he makes his inquiry though.]
To be honest, I think this would be the first job I took on that turned out as serious as this.
[She looks ahead, looking thoughtful]
I'm not Sensei's main apprentice... The fact that he took me in so that he could instruct me in the use of my Mystic Eyes is something I'm very grateful for. So in a way, if he sends me out to do a job he isn't available for, it shows he has faith in me. There's no other way I could repay him for all he's done.
[She smiles, mostly to herself.]
Putting that aside? I still would do these investigations even if he didn't tell me to. I might be made for this kind of work if only because I'm a little stubborn.
no subject
"Stubborn". It rings true, somehow, but it's a pleasant descriptor. ]
Perhaps a better word would be "diligent". Are you always so humble?
no subject
[Thao looks at him again, puzzled. His question does make her think a little more deeply.]
... You might be right! I might have always been that way.
[When she was younger, she was more prone to crying. Ai Thao was frightened, clinging to her silent sister, wondering what their future would be. But when asked questions, Thao was quite shy, finding she didn't lash out against the people who took them in even though mistrust in adults, much less adult magi, would have been expected.]
no subject
If the air around him gets a little softer, it's because he's settling. ]
To your credit— and I realize this is forward of me— your humility is a coveted trait.
no subject
I'm glad you think so... I don't consider it my best, but it's just who I am as of now.
Although, if I happen to change, I hope it's for the better.
no subject
[ Listen man... after a hard lie, finding someone humble is a breath of fresh air.
But as they near the port, his smile fades and he sets his expression to something more neutral, alert for changes in the air, changes of density in surrounding prana. ]
I sense that we're getting close.
no subject
It's... Yes. This is similar to the first night.
[She even shudders, her arms clutched around herself.]
I don't know why, but... It feels so wrong. Normally, if there was a disturbance, I wouldn't feel so...
