[Her head moves back and forth as she entertains her previous assumptions.]
Like, maybe I expected some flailing. Backwards skid of the chair. An, "Oh, shit!" could have been standard.
[Politeness? Her?? Well, she's a hospitable person, but graceful? HaHA.]

Rule Number Two: An Aubert never plays by anyone else's rules.
Rule Number Three: An Aubert must be able to adjust to any and all unforeseen circumstances. "]
Old habits die hard.
[ Honestly, he could've forgotten about his family's teachings if it weren't so ingrained already. He answers her with a hearty laugh, plopping his glove back onto the table so he can lean forward again. ]
Is it too late to give you a reaction? I suppose that would be insincere. I'll have a written report of my innermost turmoil on your counter by tomorrow morning.
no subject
Yeah, the time to react with shock and horror at my freak show of an arm has expired, hon. No second chances for this one.
[Although, he does inadvertently remind her about wanting to set up a guestbook of sorts. (He may be one customer she remembers without it though)]

[ An inscrutable smile here: is he being serious? God, let's hope not.
(It's also a deflection, shh.) ]
No need to be so self-deprecating.

So, that's me. Witch and owner of a magic cafe. And here I am... [And she sweeps an arm towards Claude, almost theatrically so.]
... Talking to a doctor from 1879.
no subject
Yours truly. Is that an invitation for me to reveal something scandalous about myself, I wonder.
[ A low hum. ]
I doubt I could say anything that matches up with what you've shown me.
no subject
[Her grandma be ollllld.]
Anyways... I guess I'd like to know something about you? [Rubbing her chin thoughtfully.] I mean, I shared about the witch thing since I'd look more like a fool trying to cover it up.
no subject
[ She's asked him the most difficult question that could be asked of him: not just because he, in essence, is sitting on years of carefully cultivated self-deprecation, but because most people don't care to ask. ]
Well. Here's a one-time only deal, then: ask me a question, and I'll answer as truthfully as I can manage.
[ This hinges on her trusting that he's honest (he's not), but there it is. ]
no subject
[She's seriously considering her options here. How will Iona Jacqueline Oakes spend this one-time only deal?]
When was the last time you got drunk?
[GOOD JOB]
no subject
He blinks, mildly disarmed, but he's quick to recover and his expression turns into something
inappropriately devious. ]
What if I said... never?
[ Claude??? Don't do this ]
no subject
[She's clearly not letting this slide.]
Maybe I should have just asked whether you've drank embalming fluid before.
no subject
[ Sherlock Holmes would beg to differ. ]
What if I told you that I've drank but never gotten drunk?
no subject
no subject
[ that, and he's a friendless loser. that too. ]
Are you disappointed?
no subject
Okay, next question. [Iona it's supposed to be a one time only deal-...]
Have any family? None? Don't care?
no subject
He doesn't hesitate, though, and answers with a very brief: ]
A brother.
[ He doesn't say 'half', and he doesn't say 'mother or father', because at the end of the day, his mother is dead and his father's a douchebag. ]
I've a feeling you'd like him— everyone does.
no subject
[Her coffee is mostly done and she swirls what's left on the bottom thoughtfully.]
I have a big brother! It's just me, him, and Grandma. And Oren. Oren counts.
no subject
[ In reference to Oren, he means. His empty cup is placed gently aside, in reverence for how good the contents were. ]
I take it the magic is hereditary? These things seem like family affairs.
[ he's so jaded about this shit it's unreal ]
no subject
[She's heard of the Emerald Witch, someone whose power was given to her by the Witch King, from Berna before, who rolled her eyes about that particular individual.]
There's not a lot of magically inclined nowadays, but that's just if you don't count those who have been around for decades.
no subject
Brightly: ] May I ask how old you are, or is that an invasion of privacy?
no subject
23. I'm still a kid and I got ways to go before I hit my first century.
no subject
[ That's a lie, she's completely beyond his understanding, but whatever. He shrugs about it. ]
You have the whole world ahead of you, literally and figuratively.
no subject
So, what about you? I mean, it's obvious you're technically older than me if we keep the year in mind, but right now you're...?
no subject
I'm?
[ Here's an expectant lean. ]
How old do I look? No need to be flattering, I like to think I can take it.
1/2
[This is... actually kind of hard to tell. On the one hand, he looks to be around her age and yet Iona's getting that feeling one has when someone older just LOVES to yank your chain...]
25...? Nah, more than that-...
[There's a slow shuffling noise that approaches from the back of the cafe, making Iona look up and over Claude's head.]
Oren??
