[Bitterblue turns her head to look up at the bearded scruffy man. She's sitting cross-legged, her dusty pale cloak around her shoulders. It's not cold, but it's a comfort.]

I can't say I'm too concerned with that at the moment.

[Her tone is a little guarded since she's not well acquainted with Hawke. Hell, she didn't even give her real name yet.]
hawkethat: (why yes my beard is quite magnificent)

[personal profile] hawkethat 2014-04-02 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
You've bigger concerns on your mind, I take it?

[Despite his own advice, Hawke finds himself gazing out over the black sea swirling with millions of pinpricks of light. How long has he been on the Thor, now? He still wonders if he'll ever get used to the sight.]

[personal profile] bitterblues 2014-04-02 04:02 am (UTC)(link)
[She scoffs, but not out of meanness.]

I can't be the only one. I'm only one person in a ship of thousands after all.
Edited 2014-04-02 04:04 (UTC)
hawkethat: mage (if only you knew)

[personal profile] hawkethat 2014-04-02 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
[Hawke shrugs easily. He wouldn't have been bothered even by a mean scoff.]

You've got me there. I guess a little vertigo might be preferable to getting too lost in one's concerns.

[personal profile] bitterblues 2014-04-02 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
[Bitterblue's quiet for a second before replying.]

Hawke, was it??

[She turns her attention back to the stars. Maybe on each of them, there was a little concentrated world? It's a fine thought.]

If you're going to linger, tell me about where you're from.
hawkethat: (well isn't that cute)

[personal profile] hawkethat 2014-04-02 04:27 am (UTC)(link)
That's right.

[He glances down at her when she makes her request, sees she's not looking at him, and smiles a bit, before returning his own attention to the stars.]

There's not much to tell. Ferelden has a reputation for being covered in mud and smelling like dog. I will concede that the former is mostly true, but I'm not sure about the latter. I moved to the Free Marches with my family about eight years ago, and I really don't think it's any less brown there than in Ferelden. I never noticed any dog smell there either, though Marchers don't seem to care for dogs as much as Fereldens. If it smells like anything, I'd say it has the faint but distinct odor of despair and bad temper.

[personal profile] bitterblues 2014-04-02 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
[His thorough if not unsavory description of his world makes her crack the slightest of smiles.]

And I take it that you've kept your good temper from this "Ferelden" despite the pervading odor of the Free Marches bad one?
hawkethat: (now you're speaking sense!)

[personal profile] hawkethat 2014-04-02 04:39 am (UTC)(link)
Well, since you noticed, that must mean that I have.

[He sees your smile there, Sparks]

[personal profile] bitterblues 2014-04-02 04:41 am (UTC)(link)
[She's not hiding them, it's just hard to find a reason to smile freely nowadays.]

Bad temper is a perfect description of some kingdoms from where I'm from.
hawkethat: (how very curious)

[personal profile] hawkethat 2014-04-02 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
Hmmm...interesting how universal that seems to be. Why can't anyone ever be cheerful and happy?

[personal profile] bitterblues 2014-04-02 04:46 am (UTC)(link)
I've asked myself that hundreds of times. But it's possible at least. There's some hope yet.
hawkethat: (i'm the champion of kirkwall)

[personal profile] hawkethat 2014-04-02 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
It sounds like you've either had more luck than I have, or you're more optimistic.

[Says the jaded old man in his early 30s]

[personal profile] bitterblues 2014-04-02 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know if I'm completely optimistic.

[Bitterblue stands up and sighs, leaning against the wall.]

But nothing changes if you keep thinking the same things over and over.
hawkethat: (that worked out pretty well)

[personal profile] hawkethat 2014-04-02 05:03 am (UTC)(link)
That's a good philosophy. If I ever get the chance, I'll try suggesting it to some folks back home.

[Though the main lady who might have benefited from it is dead. Welp.]

[personal profile] bitterblues 2014-04-02 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Will they actually listen though?
hawkethat: (well isn't that cute)

[personal profile] hawkethat 2014-04-02 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
[He laughs a bit ruefully at that.]

Probably not. They're all far too set in their ways.

People, honestly.

[personal profile] bitterblues 2014-04-02 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
What kind of ways do you think could stand to change?

[She really does sound interested; about the way things worked in other places, the whos, whats, and the whys. Everything was interesting because she feels like she can learn something to apply to her own kingdom.]
hawkethat: mage (if only you knew)

[personal profile] hawkethat 2014-04-07 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, nothing too big or earth-shattering. Mostly the whole "Every mage without exception is mere seconds away from killing us all and therefore none of them deserve to be treated like people" school of thinking that's been so popular in Kirkwall since before I lived there.

[personal profile] bitterblues 2014-04-07 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
Mages... Ah. Like Gracelings except not.

[She murmurs this mostly to herself.]

I see what you mean though. You can't make a lid on something that is going to eventually going to overflow. It doesn't seem like the most effective policy.
hawkethat: (well isn't that cute)

[personal profile] hawkethat 2014-04-07 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
That's a good metaphor. I like it.

So what's a Graceling? Is that something I can ask about?

[personal profile] bitterblues 2014-04-07 04:54 am (UTC)(link)
[She's heard about people with other abilities, but they are not as clearly marked on this ship like the ones are in her world.]

I suppose you could say they're like mages, but most Gracelings are different from one another. Each is Graced with a different ability ranging from normal to dangerous. And on the continent I'm from... [She points at her eyes]

You can tell if someone is Graced by their eyes. Gracelings have different colored ones.
hawkethat: (you're wearing THAT?)

[personal profile] hawkethat 2014-04-07 04:59 am (UTC)(link)
So just one ability per person? What's defined as 'normal'?
Edited 2014-04-07 05:07 (UTC)

[personal profile] bitterblues 2014-04-07 05:12 am (UTC)(link)
Well, maybe not so much "normal" as it is harmless and sometimes useful. And there's a large variety. Someone could be Graced with something as abstract as fearlessness or not needing any sleep, or even disguise. I know a Graceling who was almost unmatched in unarmed combat. [That's partially a lie; her cousin Po had a different Grace altogether, but a fighting Grace is not uncommon.]

There are Graces that are of the mind as well. Those... most people tend to be wary of obviously.

hawkethat: (how very curious)

[personal profile] hawkethat 2014-04-07 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
...Well, to be fair, there's nothing quite like having one's mind messed with to turn one off the idea.

Are "Graces" caused by something? Or do they just happen?

[personal profile] bitterblues 2014-04-07 05:24 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think anyone's actually sure where Graces come from. They just... [She gestures with her hands and shrugs.]

They just are. [Her father was a Graceling, but she didn't inherit anything from him (thank god).]

In any case, only two of the seven kingdoms give their resident Gracelings rights instead of having the ruler "own" them. It's a start.
