[It was another night in the town of Blackgale, with no moon in sight to set the dark sky aglow amid the blanket of stars. The lack of moonlight, however, was not stopping the local (and only) witch, Amelia Steinbeck, from doing a much needed patrol for this particular night. After all, when a demon from the darkest realm from who knows where comes to ones doorstep with the intention of murder, there's probably others lurking around.

That wasn't going to do, not at all.


Of course, she had to be at school soon for an early morning meeting... But hey, it's high school and she was always on time no matter what, thanks to magic. And thus, Amelia began to wander around in the streets, with a green flame flickering in one hand-- only visible to her, other magic users, and a magnet for more demons.

["Greetings, Mr. West...!

Amelia digs into her food looking like an annoyed teenager. Which really looks kind of humorous. And she's grumbling angrily to herself.]

NOW you act like a stupid doting father... I'm not FIVE, good god. Did this on purpose, I know it--

[spellbent]

[ Warren just laughs ] He seems nice enough.

[recluserose]

He's not. He just likes making others, mainly me, look bad.

[And on the letter, another sentence or two starts to appear, but Amelia doesn't notice seeing as she's too focused on being irritated. This message seems to be important]

"For your eyes only Mr. West.

Just some friendly advice.

What was given to her cannot be taken in any way."

[And they disappear as quickly as they appeared. Amelia speaks up none the wiser.]

-- But I suppose he doesn't have a problem with you if he's willing to act that silly.

[spellbent]

I-- [ a pause, and he eyes the letter. Well then, that was interesting. ]

I think it's harmless enough, and he seems to approve of you visiting my world.

[recluserose]

Maybe it's a good opportunity to study how magic operates in your world. Do you have any books I could borrow or is some other way to record such information? [She is an intellectual at heart...]

[spellbent]

I have a fairly extensive library, actually. [ just don't ask him where he gets his books ] You're free to take notes if you want, as well.

[recluserose]

[Nodding. She looks serious as usual, but there's a glint in her eye. Nerd side awaken!]

I'd like that very much.

Hm. I don't know what else I could do aside from studying and observing your world's magic...

[spellbent]

I'm sure we could find something to do.

[recluserose]

I'll take your word for it. [About to take another bite of her meal when a shrill, but swift shriek vibrates through the air. The people in the restaurant jump all of them murmuring. Some think it's just an ambulance, but by the chatter and whispers, some are talking about how Blackgale, despite being such a pleasant town, has this bad tendency to have... Creepy moments.

Amelia blinks.]

I believe the gnomes worked.

[spellbent]

That was demon making that noise?

[recluserose]

They must have sent a rather powerful one. Either that or it was simply a case of overkill.

[spellbent]

That fact that we could hear it from here is a little disconcerting.

[recluserose]

The town's used to it even though they don't know what it is.

[She pauses]

Ten years ago there were more of them. They practically terrorized the place, but I was able to root out the problem with some help.

[spellbent]

What was the problem? If I may ask.

[recluserose]

There was... A huge source of magic that suddenly appeared in town one day. The demons weren't just searching for it on their own-- they were under orders.

[She suddenly looks uncomfortable talking about this, but she continues]

All the time I'd been living there, I never noticed there was actually a second witch living in town. But she wasn't born with any power despite being from a magical bloodline. What she did have was a tome to summon the creatures.

[spellbent]

You managed to find her, then, and put an end to it?

[recluserose]

[She nods]

That's the gist of it. I had to kill a particularly powerful demon she summoned, one that could have swallowed the whole town.

The whole incident is how I gained my title. [There is an odd quality to her voice.

It's... sad.]

[spellbent]

...It's not a good memory for you, is it?

[recluserose]

It isn't.

I may have gained recognition, but I never did feel like I did any good. [She bites her lip and lets out a shaky sigh]

Ten years... It really isn't long at all.

[spellbent]

You gained recognition, but you lost something that day, didn't you?

[recluserose]

I suppose that's the best way to put it.

... Let's head back soon. I need to check my house.

[spellbent]

Of course.

[recluserose]

[Timeskip to her house-- And there is smoke coming from the garden. The gnomes are emitting smoke and the flower beds and trees are somewhat scorched.

Amelia examines the damage doing a 'tsk tsk']

Still too messy.

[spellbent]

[ Warren surveys the damage with a bemused expression ]

What the hell do these things do? Shoot lasers out of their eyes?

[recluserose]

Sort of. I thought the shock of being bested by enchanted garden gnomes would hurt more to be honest. [And that is serious sarcasm lacing her words right there]
