[It was another night in the town of Blackgale, with no moon in sight to set the dark sky aglow amid the blanket of stars. The lack of moonlight, however, was not stopping the local (and only) witch, Amelia Steinbeck, from doing a much needed patrol for this particular night. After all, when a demon from the darkest realm from who knows where comes to ones doorstep with the intention of murder, there's probably others lurking around.
That wasn't going to do, not at all.
Of course, she had to be at school soon for an early morning meeting... But hey, it's high school and she was always on time no matter what, thanks to magic. And thus, Amelia began to wander around in the streets, with a green flame flickering in one hand-- only visible to her, other magic users, and a magnet for more demons.
Come at her bros.]

LET'S DO THE TIMESKIP AGAIN??
So the tall, well-dressed man in a fedora crosses the park, hands shoved in his coat pockets. He does at least attempt to look friendly. ]
I've seen a lot of people in this park with their dogs. Cats are a bit rarer.
[ He has a slight accent- English- though it's clear he's been in the states for a while, because it's barely there. ]
IT'S JUST A JUMP TO THE LEFT
You meet all sorts of people throughout your lifetime. Bringing a cat to the park is hardly anything to drop one's jaw at.
[... Okay, that sounded almost mean oops. But oh well.]
AND A STEP TO THE RIIIIIGHT
No, I guess it's not. Magically drying it off after it gets wet, however, is.
PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HIPS
She puts on her hands on her hips and sighs]
I suppose if you noticed that, there's no use attempting to pull the wool over your eyes?
AND BRING YOUR KNEES IN TIGHT
[ he extends a hand to her ] Jacob Randall, detective-slash-wizard, at your service.
BUT IT'S THE PELVIC THRUST!
...
...
She's way too damn smart to reveal knowing that name and mentioning a certain someone from who she heard the name from.]
... Amelia Steinbeck. [Returns the handshake in a curt manner]
THAT REALLY DRIVES YOU INSAAAAANE
I hope you don't mind me prying, but what brings you to town?
LET'S DO THE TIMESKIP AGAIIIIIIIIN
And I'm just passing through, exploring the town a bit. I'm from California.

I normally wouldn't bother you, but things have been a bit of mess here recently. I hope you don't mind.

[ he glances down at Dusky, holding out a hand towards the kitten. Dusky may notice that he smells a bit like dog. Or wolf, rather. ] Who's your friend?
no subject
But that would be a terrible example for my literature students. High school seniors are still so impressionable.
[Dusky can smell that scent all too well. And thus turns her nose up quite literally at his hand]
Her name's Dusky. [Frowns at the kitten] She's usually friendly. Sorry for her behavior.
no subject
[ he withdraws his hand, shrugging ] I own a dog of sorts. It's likely she can smell him.

I have a question though. You were able to sense my magic, not necessarily me using that simple spell correct?
no subject
[ he regards her for a moment, thinking about how to answer that ] See, rather than sense. It's not a common gift.
no subject
You can see this then?
no subject
I can.
no subject
What else can you see from me just standing here?

[She tosses her now empty paper cup into a nearby trash bin.]
Do you deal with both normal and unnatural crimes or just one of those? I'd imagine you'd have to deal with the magical side of crime whether you like it or not.
[And just thinking about Warren and all the stuff she can only guess he's done. She feels bad for you man :(]
no subject
[ a shrug ] It's a living.
[ The Jacob of a few years or so ago would have said he hated it, though. ]
no subject
I apologize for worrying you though.
no subject
Nothing you apologize for. As I said, if circumstances were different, I would have let you be. [ a beat, then: ] Are you familiar of the maenads of Greek mythology?
