[It was another night in the town of Blackgale, with no moon in sight to set the dark sky aglow amid the blanket of stars. The lack of moonlight, however, was not stopping the local (and only) witch, Amelia Steinbeck, from doing a much needed patrol for this particular night. After all, when a demon from the darkest realm from who knows where comes to ones doorstep with the intention of murder, there's probably others lurking around.

That wasn't going to do, not at all.


Of course, she had to be at school soon for an early morning meeting... But hey, it's high school and she was always on time no matter what, thanks to magic. And thus, Amelia began to wander around in the streets, with a green flame flickering in one hand-- only visible to her, other magic users, and a magnet for more demons.

Why am I not surprised?

[spellbent]

We've long since established that I'm not out to make friends.

[recluserose]

I'm sure it'd lengthen your lifespan were that the case.

[Aiden finishes mixing her drink-- an old fashioned Whiskey Sour and she takes a glass taking a large swing of it. She pauses and looks pointedly at their bartender]

A little light on the whiskey aren't you? [He rolls his eyes and then glances at Warren to see if he's made his choice]

[spellbent]

I'm doing fine so far.

[ He chuckles- he would not have taken Amelia for a connoisseur of alcohol, of all things. He's... not. ]

Just a Guinness, I think.

[She likes drinking. A lot. And Aiden is making that order quickly for Warren-- when he's done he slides off to the opposite side of the counter so these two can just chat]

What is 'fine' for you exactly?

[spellbent]

[ He takes a thoughtful sip of his beer ]

I'm still alive. That's always a positive.

And it sounds oddly optimistic of you.

[spellbent]

Can't very well live forever if I'm dead, now can I?

[ He shrugs, taking another drink ]

On a magical scale, you outclass me by miles, but in my own world, within the confines of its laws of magic, I'm pretty far up there on the food chain. People tend to just leave me alone, rather than pick fights.

[recluserose]

Funny, I always seem to get into fights regardless of my status.

[spellbent]

I daresay even because of your status.

[recluserose]

Imagine that. [Taking another large swig of her drink, her cheeks flushing a bit from the heat of the liquor]

[spellbent]

The things some people will do for status. [ like he's one to talk ]

There does tend to be a lot of sacrificing involved. [Doesn't she know it]

[spellbent]

Oh yes. [ he stares at nothing for a moment, a small frown on his face ]

Do you think you will take an apprentice?

[recluserose]

When I feel like it.

[spellbent]

It that a typical practice for wizards and witches in your world?

[recluserose]

If you have magic from birth, you're usually already assigned to a senior wizard or witch, one who has credentials from the Magician's Guild backing them up. [Moves her glass around so the ice clinks against the sides]

Usually if one is born into a magical family, it's their parents who teach them to put their magic under control. Then they're handed over to a teacher who will guide them through techniques.

There are plenty of qualified wizards and witches who take on apprentices, sometimes up to five at a time. But sometimes, a student wants to seek out a more prestigious teacher, one with a 'title' so to speak.

Still, if you can remember, I'm an odd case. My apprenticeship was completely and totally random.

[spellbent]

I do remember.

I suppose I'm just curious about the way things work for you and yours.

[recluserose]

How does it work where you're from then?

[spellbent]

First of all, magic is genetic. It can't be learned, or given, or what have you. Second of all, only males can become wizards- at least, if there's a female wizard out there, I certainly haven't heard of her.

Usually it falls to the wizard's father to teach him. If he can't, then the family will pick a teacher. Another relative or close family friend. The boy will learn the basics to a point, then choose a skillset and go from there.

Seriously? Only male wizards?

[spellbent]

Seriously.

Girls born into magical families tend to have their powers manifest in other ways. Psychic abilities, magical connections with plants or animals. There's even an interesting club in Vegas full of girls who specialize in sex magic. A small number are even born with no magic at all.

[recluserose]

Hm. Interesting, very interesting... We have a completely different group for psychics and they keep to themselves, much like we would. There's more of them than there are magic users.

Do they tend to live long?

[spellbent]

Our lifespans are about the same. Four hundred years or so, though the more powerful ones can push five hundred.

This is actually rather fascinating at least from my point of view. Setting aside my mentor, the most powerful magic users in this world are actually witches.
